ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that telomere shortening and/or loss are risk factors for infertility.DesignRetrospective analysis of status in patients with infertility using conventional cytogenetic data collected prospectively.SettingAcademic centers.Patient(s)Cytogenetic slides cultured peripheral lymphocytes from 50 undergoing fertility treatment and 150 healthy donors, including 100 donors matched age.Intervention(s)Cytogenetic were used to detect chromosomal aberrations.Main Outcome Measure(s)Telomere length aberrations analyzed after centromere staining.Result(s)The mean consulting was significantly less than similar age. Moreover, showed more extreme doublet formation controls. Telomere pronounced structural aberrations. Dicentric chromosomes identified 6/13 patients, constitutional leading instability correlated end-to-end fusions. Conclusion(s)Our findings demonstrate feasibility analyzing addition aberrations, slides. attrition dysfunction represent main common characteristic infertility, potential implications assessment. Pending further studies, these techniques correlate outcome assisted reproduction integrity may a novel useful diagnostic prognostic tool medical care this field. To infertility. Rapid telomere shortening in children.

Telomere shortening may reflect the total number of divisions experienced by a somatic cell and is associated with replicative senescence. We found that the average rate of telomere shortening in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained longitudinally from nine different infants during the first 3 years of life (270 bp per year) is more than fourfold higher than in adults and does no...

Telomere shortening in kidneys with age.

The histology and function of the kidney deteriorates with age and age-related diseases, but the mechanisms involved in renal aging are not known. In vitro studies suggest that telomere shortening is important in replicative senescence, and is accelerated by stresses that increase replication. This study explored the relationship between age and telomere length in surgical samples from 24 human...

Accelerated Telomere Shortening in Acromegaly; IGF-I Induces Telomere Shortening and Cellular Senescence

OBJECTIVE Patients with acromegaly exhibit reduced life expectancy and increased prevalence of age-related diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. However, the underlying mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Telomere shortening is reportedly associated with reduced life expectancy and increased prevalence of these age-related diseases. METHODS We measured tel...

Stochastic models of telomere shortening.

Shortening of chromosome ends, known as telomeres, is one of the supposed mechanisms of cellular aging and death. We provide a probabilistic analysis of the process of loss of telomere ends. The first work concerned with that issue is the paper by Levy et al. [J. Molec. Biol. 225 (1992) 951-960]. Their deterministic model reproduced the observed frequencies of viable cells in the in vitro exper...
